‘Mahasattva’: The prince who donated the body to Bagheni who was fighting death

January 2, Kathmandu. The drama ‘Mahasattva’ based on cultural and mythological stories is being staged at Kaushi Theatre.

Kiran Chapagain, who is acting in the play, says that the play, which was staged on Thursday, 25th of January, has received good support from the audience since the first day.

The play staged by Vajra Kala Kunj at Kaushi Theater in Teku is especially based on the story of the establishment of Namo Buddha and the birth of Shakyamuni Buddha.

Mahasattva was the youngest of the three princes of King Maharatha and Queen Satyavati of the then Panchal and present day Panauti kingdoms.

Prince Mahasattva and his two brothers Mahaprahalad and Mahadev went to the forest with soldiers to look for black flowers for the Mahapuja to be held in the kingdom of Panchal. They meet a hungry Baghini.

Prince Mahasattva saves Baghini, who is fighting death with her 5 Damarus when she is unable to hunt, by donating her own body.

In this way, the prince who gave great donation dies and in time he is reborn as Shakyamuni Buddha. The area where he died after donating his body is famous as Namo:Buddha. This topic is specially covered in the play.

Ingi Hopo Koich Sunuwar has adapted the play based on the story, imagination and direction of Chandman Munikar.

According to director Munikar, the drama Mahasattva is taken from the Baygrijataka under the Suvarnaprabhasutram scriptures, one of the nine books of Buddhism.

According to Munikar, this play was prepared after about 6 months of study, research and consultation with Buddhist scholars.

Actors Sudan Man Munikar, Sangeeta Thapa Magar, Yuvahang Rai, Smriti Shrestha, Vishal Pulami, Khushi Sunuwar, Sachin Lama, Sumitra Pehim, Kiran Chapagain, Poonam Lakshmi Magar and Prem Chand Pandey are acting in the play which will be staged till January 5.

Drama ‘Mahasattva’ is staged every day at 5:15 pm and extra show at 1 pm on Saturdays.
