Kathmandu. World famous Indian tabla player Ustad Zakir Hussain has passed away. Grammy winner Hussain passed away on Monday morning, his family said. 73-year-old Hussain was suffering from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
He was admitted to a hospital in San Francisco, USA for the last two weeks. After his condition worsened, he was admitted to the ICU and his family said that he died there.
Hussain was born on 9 March 1951 in Mumbai. He was also awarded Padma Shri in 1988, Padma Bhushan in 2002 and Padma Vibhushan in 2023.
Hussain was honored with four Grammy Awards in his career. In 2009, he won his first Grammy for ‘Global Drum Project’ for Best Music Album. In 2024, he won three more Grammys including Best Global Music Performance for ‘Pashto’, Best Contemporary Instrumental Album for ‘As We Speak’ and Best Global Music Album for ‘This Moment’.
Indian politicians and Bollywood celebrities have expressed grief over his death.
